Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Dvortygirl 07:50, 27 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi

[edit]

Hi Milliehandshrimp, why don't you discuss the style of a Japanese entry, with me and others? AFAIK, the Japanese part of Wiktionary is only in its initial stage, and it doesn't have no established style for Japanese words yet, so we have to try to lay the foundation with discussions and experimental cut-and-try edits.

Actually, I regard (and of course, you can regard) the style that I'm currently employing not as a standard one, but as an experimental one which should be further improved and expanded. I feel that such understanding of the immaturity is the primal consensus among us, previously-existing contributors to Wiktionary's Japanese part.

Beer parlour or the talk page of Wiktionary:About Japanese would be a good place to begin. The validity of the "Furigana" header is already under dispute at a section of Beer parlour. I think your sophistication in Japanese would be much help for us in coming discussions. --Tohru 18:49, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Japanese character stroke order

[edit]

I love these new graphics you're adding. Are they your own work? Might I suggest arrowing a tiny arrowhead to show the direction of each stroke? — Hippietrail 17:53, 22 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I just found them on wikimedia commons and thought I'd stick them in their respective pages :) I agree stroke direction would be helpful but I'm not really prepared to take on that responsibility. Millie 00:54, 23 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Protection of your user page

[edit]

Because your user page was a target of page move vandalism today, I've protected it against page moves (only). If you ever wish to rename your user page (which is unlikely), please ask any administrator to unprotect it. Uncle G 04:56, 16 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kanji decatting

[edit]

I've replied to you on my talk page. Since this is a kind of "urgent" matter, I decided to give you a heads-up here. (Please discuss on my talk page.) - dcljr 22:32, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why did I start doing this?

[edit]

You know what? This is ridiculous. Someone needs to make a bot to categorize all these single-character CJK entries automatically. It just needs to search the wikisource for "== Chinese Hanzi ==", "== Japanese Kanji ==", and "== Korean Hanja ==", and categorize them as appropriate (making sure not to duplicate any existing categories, of course). Do you know someone who can write such a bot (or modify their existing categorizing bot)? - dcljr 23:29, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm sure whoever is writing/modifying the bot could take into account small variations like the ones you mentioned. Anyway, I'm most concerned about getting all the entries that haven't been touched since NanshuBot created them (and there's thousands of them, apparently), and all of those use the headings mentioned above. Besides, verifying the entries have been categorized is a lot faster than actually categorizing all of them (manually). In addition, the bot could look for the radical and use it to sort each kanji in its (various) category (-ies), something I'm not about to try to do manually! - dcljr 23:43, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I'm assuming all the "common" kanji have been categorized already, right? In other words, the bot should be programmed to use Category:Uncommon kanji by default, right? - dcljr 23:51, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, we won't make that assumption. I'll post somewhere about this... Thanks. - dcljr 23:56, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category:Japanese language

[edit]

It looks like you are removing this category from some of my entries and keeping it in others, can I ask why? Thanks, Gerard Foley 13:16, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The new entries I'm adding are from

so you might want to edit those if there is a problem with my layout (it will save you from redoing my entries). The kanji tab will have to be added after, I can't get it to work with the templates. Gerard Foley 02:25, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Japanese templates

[edit]

Just copy this code and fill in the hiragana, romaji and the def:

The hiragana and romaji are automaticly linked.

The code is at the bottom of each page, to make it easy to copy/paste. Gerard Foley 13:22, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Really two colons after subst? - dcljr 01:50, 28 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

This code will look for a page named User:Gmcfoley/janoun in the Template Namespace i.e. Template:User:Gmcfoley/janoun. The colon stops this so looks for User:Gmcfoley/janoun. This also works for images, :Image:Example.jpg will give a link to the image instead of puting the image on the page. Image:Example.jpg

Putting subst: before the name of a template will cause the text of the template to be placed in the page when you press save. w:Wikipedia:Template substitution has more info on this.

Join the two together and you get

Got it. - dcljr 23:10, 7 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fixes

[edit]

Thanks for following along behind me and making my entries nicer -- this can be hard to get used to! If you have advice for me on how to get this a little faster (right now, I mostly copy a similar entry then just replace relevant parts), please let me know. Cruinne 15:39, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

... and re: sort keys -- that makes a lot more sense now. Thanks :) I'll be doing some clean up this weekend then :) Cruinne 14:39, 11 February 2006 (UTC) (Ack! Looks like you already got there. Thanks very much :) ごくろうさまでした! Cruinne 14:46, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to contribute

[edit]

Hi,

You might or might not already be aware that there is now a new system in place for marking translations that need to be checked (those that are suspected of being incorrect or those where it is not clear which sense(s) of a word the translations apply to). (See here for the Beer parlour discussion on this topic.)

Translations to be checked are now categorised by language. For example, Category:Translations_to_be_checked_(French) contains a list of all words where French translations need to be checked. This is designed to make the checking of these translations easier to maintain and work with.

I'm contacting everyone who has either expressed an interest in working on translations or has indicated in Wiktionary:Babel that they have a good knowledge of a particular foreign language or languages.

Would you be interested in helping out with the translations to be checked for Japanese? If so, please read the page on how to check translations.

If you want to reply to this message, please do so on my talk page. Thanks for your help you can provide.
