Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:56, 13 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Native language

[edit]

Hi, I was curious whether your native language is Afrikaans. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:20, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lingo Bingo Dingo Yes it is. Why do you ask? K175 (talk) 08:21, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have a question about Afrikaans kikvors. Does it refer to both frogs and toads, like padda, or only to frogs? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:26, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
According to my Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal, 6de uitgawe (2015; "HAT") kikvors is a synonym for padda, which implies (though not according to the HAT itself) that it referes to both frogs and toads. However, my Afrikaans-English school dictionary from 1944 translates kikvors as frog and my Afrikaans-German dictionary from 1969 translates it as Frosch ("frog"). K175 (talk) 08:37, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Interestingly, according to the HAT, padda specifically refers to the family Ranidae, so only true frogs and not toads. However, my Afrikaans-English dictionary translates toad as padda and my Afrikaans-German dictionary has no entry for Kröte but it translates Unke as (brul)padda. K175 (talk) 08:42, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so it seems it is somewhat unclear whether kikvors can also denote frogs toads? I think that is best dealt with in a usage note. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:46, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think the lack of clarity relates to whether it can denote toads (if that's what you meant), yes, to me at least this is unclear. K175 (talk) 08:48, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, "frogs" in the previous message was an error. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:55, 14 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Lingo Bingo Dingo Please see [1]. User:Burgert_Behr is a linguist. I now include the entries from the HAT for padda and skurwepadda:
My Afrikaans-English and Afrikaans-German dictionaries do not contain entries for skurwepadda. CC User:Suidpunt. K175 (talk) 07:35, 15 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for all your work! Skurwepadda is attestable (google books:"skurwepadda") according to the criteria of the English Wiktionary, so I put it in the translation table of toad and in the list at padda for now. Parenthetically, the claim that Dutch doesn't have a word for "toad" is not correct, pad (etymology 2, plural padden) has this meaning. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:19, 15 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Plurals and singulars in translation table

[edit]

Hi, it's usually not necessary to add both singular and plural forms to translation tables. Please only add both of them in rare cases, such as when the singular is also attested as a collective, as with vis. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 10:01, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
