New language templates

These language templates allow the translations to be hidden or shown at will. There has been quite a bit of discussion in the Translation policy page regarding this, and general consensus is that it would be better to hide translations. The functionality was put in last week, so I am updating the policies to refelct it. Do you want to go through a couple more steps to gain consensus before making the change? --Aaronsama 01:19, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

(My, it's quiet in here for someone with as long a contribution record as yours!) First off, congratulations on a bit over 1500 edits, and good ones, too, from what I have seen. I do enjoy the company and assistance of the other bright and conscientious folks around here. Since you appear to be a suitably earnest and long-standing contributor, I was wondering if you might like to be nominated for adminship. From what I can see, you'd be a shoo-in for it. It will mean that you get a few extra buttons with which to help us remove nonsense and expel its perpetrators. Also, this talk page might get busier. --Dvortygirl 00:15, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't know if there is really an etiquette for whose talk page to respond upon. It spreads the conversation across two pages, but I prefer to respond on the page of the person whose attention I want. That is, if I respond on my page, you don't get an orange notification.

As for sysopping, all that changes is that you a few extra buttons: delete, rollback, protect, and block, all for helping clean up after vandalism, user "edit tests", and other non-dictionary matter. You can read more about them on Help:Sysop tools (I'll confess to not having read that page in a long time, so if what's there doesn't help, please ask me again.)

While having sysop tools means you should use them with discretion, it doesn't obligate you to use them. We all take breaks and most of us still spend part of our wiki time editing. You still choose when, what, and how much to do. You can also unblock, unprotect, undelete and undo your reverts in case you goof. Most vandalism is glaringly obvious, but if you're uncertain, you can still {{rfv}}, {{rfd}}, or {{rfc}} an article and ask the community to decide.

Along the way, please don't hesitate to ask questions, whether on my talk page, in IRC, or by email. If I don't know the answer, I can probably find someone who does. The IRC channel is frequented by several veteran admins (myself included), who can help out, too. —Dvortygirl 23:12, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't feel any offence, so there was nothing to apologise for. Of course, my first comment was not completely without some irony. My proposed definition was based on those famous paragraphs from Genesis (quoted from w:Sodom and Gomorrah):

4. When they had not yet retired, and the people of the city, the people of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, the entire populace from every end[of the city].

5. And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, and let us be intimate with them."

That is not the King James version, though. In KJV the same line says, "bring them out unto us, that we may know them." --Dart evader 19:00, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Translations - wiki links

At Wiktionary:Votes/2007-01/Translations - wiki links (run off) you say "again, with the request that these should not be required to add a translation" - do you mean (a) that every language should not need to have a translation (b) every translation does not need to have an inter-wiki link. or (c) something else? —Saltmarsh 06:39, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Images on Wiktionary

Thank you for adding illustrations to our entries. These help everyone who uses the site.

Some tips on Wiktionary image style:

1. Please add images within the language section, just under the ==English==, rather than floating at the top and outside of any language section. Wiktionary contains words in many langugaes, and all content should be located within a language section.
2. Please do not specify "right" or particular sizes. Wiktionary sizes all images to uniform width and horizontal alignment automatically.
3. When tying image text to particular definition, use part of the definition rather than the number of the sense. Definitions are not infrequently re-ordered, so the numbers can change.
