Hi. Please change {{adj}} in the entry Christadelphian. {{adj}} is not the template for adjective. Try {{pos a}} instead. And welcome to Wiktionary! --Volants 09:02, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

Christadelphian

Thanks for taking an interest in this entry. However, I'm assuming the translations are copied from Wikipedia. Also I'm not sure that it's an adjective (although I think it is). You also seem to have added some information that's already in the entry, such as duplicating the etymology. It's not a proper noun, and it needs some templates. In other words, we might want to consider going back to a previous 'good' edition. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:21, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Have I duplicated the etymology? Only spelling it out. Yes the plural noun forms are taken from Wikipedia, which doesn't in itself create a problem since the adjective and noun singular forms can be derived in most cases (just not all by myself). It's not a proper noun, no. What templates do you have in mind? In ictu oculi 10:29, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
As for the adjective, have you used the noun translations for the adjective section as well? The French was wrong, for example. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:36, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I appreciate your comments on the header. By all means please help me and reverse/undo what I've done if it goes against Entry layout explained. However please don't delete any of the translations. I've put a lot of work into starting to turn the noun plurals into (a) noun singulars and (b) adjective forms. Very best wishes. Sorry, what do you mean by "The French was wrong"? The sm noun and sm adj are identical in French. In ictu oculi 10:44, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Lowercase, see (deprecated template usage) chrétien and (deprecated template usage) hindou for further examples. Anyway, ok sure I won't delete the translations. Consider using {{ttbc|language name}}. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:58, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ahah, I thought I'd caught all the upper case. Thanks for the template. In ictu oculi 11:18, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi there. You might like to add some babel templates to your user page - then we would know which translations we can trust. SemperBlotto 11:19, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Semperblotto. Thanks but if you don't mind I'd prefer not to, particularly in Wikiworld. There's a Japanese saying 猿も木から落ちる even the monkey falls from the tree, which in this context means that no translation can ever be trusted, and all translations are works in progress. But rest assured if I leave a live link then it means I've done due diligence on it. Cheers. In ictu oculi 11:33, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question: in the header "Christadelphians pl." is now in red (not one of my edits). How do I mark a plural in the translations like Irish Críostadélfiachas with a pl. marker? I see the |m}} |mf}} etc for gender, is there a similar template marker for pl.? Cheers. Thanks for any help. In ictu oculi 11:41, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Something like {{t|fr|word|m|p}}. However, the translations shouldn't be for plurals, as this isn't a plural. Mglovesfun (talk) 11:45, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks, I realise that marking the plural in addition is no substitute for the translation of the singular. But particularly in the case of East European languages the plural is worth keeping. In ictu oculi 11:53, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Out of interest, why? Mglovesfun (talk) 11:54, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps for those lazybods among us who get easily confused going from one inflected Slavonic language to another. In ictu oculi 12:39, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Danish translation is given as "Kristadelfianere", which is in accordance with w:da:Kristadelfianere. Using Wikipedia as a source is however questionable, and a google search for Kristadelfianer gives 3 hit (41 for the plural). Also you will note that the Danish Wikipedia article uses "Christadelphians" in the text. I don't think the term should be regarded as a Danish word.--Leo Laursen – (talk · contribs) 12:09, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I only see 4 hits for the adjective form kristadelfiansk[e] too. Fine by me, then please feel free to delete the Danish translation, if the word cannot be translated into Danish. There is e.g. no Albanian translation either so there does not have to be one for every language. In ictu oculi 12:31, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Even though I think it was a mistake to add it, I don't know that for sure, so I'm not going to change anything.--Leo Laursen – (talk · contribs) 13:41, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
The page is a horrible, horrible mess. I was thinking of moving it to User:In ictu oculi/Christadelphan as you're kinda using it as a sandbox. We've blocked users before for editing languages they no nothing about. Try reading an entry with lots of translations to see how they're done. Mglovesfun (talk) 12:40, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Would you indicate please which translation is incorrect and which language I know nothing about? But by all means I'll delete part of my work if that makes you feel better. Don't move it to a sandbox please. Thanks, since I can keep my own sandbox on my PC. In ictu oculi 13:02, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Which I've done; all work deleted. Are you happy now? In ictu oculi 13:16, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

This page is a mess. See Wiktionary:About Russian and Wiktionary:Russian inflection templates as a beginning. SemperBlotto 14:02, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd already fixed it, but I'll look at those in the morning, thanks. Good night. In ictu oculi 14:13, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hiya. You seem to be editing this page dozens of times. Each edit by an unfamiliar user gets flagged for review by an administrator, so you'd save us a little time if you could work out what you want to do first and then combine several edits into one. Just a suggestion. Equinox 13:45, 28 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Have a look at WT:WL. Users tend to get added to this when they have built up a reasonable history of good edits. Equinox 14:00, 28 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please use the translation upload tool! There is possibility to add more than one translation at the same time. --Volants 14:55, 28 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
