Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
- A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
- If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.
You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.
Again, welcome! Wyang (talk) 21:50, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
References header
[edit]All of our headers have the first letter capitalized, and we never use an L2 header (with two equal signs in the markup) except for languages. That means you should use "===References===" or "====References===="- but never "==references==". Chuck Entz (talk) 14:04, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Chuck Entz, Thank you for your advice. I understand it. HappyMidnight (talk) 04:48, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- To be clear, references still belong in that section, not at the top somewhere. Also, is
{{R:NIKL}}
really only for entries that have been copied from that source? It seems like it might be better just to have a normal reference template. You should check with other Korean editors on this. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 05:15, 7 March 2017 (UTC)- @Metaknowledge Thank you. I will put this template at the bottom, not at the top. And I will ask other user of Korean. HappyMidnight (talk) 05:24, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Wyang, Atitarev, TAKASUGI Shinji are people who may be willing to help. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 05:54, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- To be clear, references still belong in that section, not at the top somewhere. Also, is
- I was just looking at 짐승; I don't think we really need to indicate the reference for such a short and common phrase. Nevertheless, thanks to HappyMidnight for pointing out this source - it is a pretty good site. I guess the format of the template would depend on the extent to which we rely on the site. Just to double-check the copyright side of things, is it absolutely the case that we can copy definitions from the site, so long as the attribution template is present? If so, this would be very, very useful here. Wyang (talk) 08:41, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- I agree
{{NIKL}}
is not so useful since you said you don't think so. I just wanted to provide information of this useful website, https://krdict.korean.go.kr/ . So, if many users know this website is useful, then it's all I need. As you can see the copyright policy of this, https://krdict.korean.go.kr/eng/kboardPolicy/copyRightTermsInfo?nation=eng , we can use it very usefully. HappyMidnight (talk) 14:24, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- I agree
Korean examples
[edit]Thank you for your contributions. You have added a lot of Korean examples that are long and precise. There will be no problem if you make them yourself, but if you copy them, you must make it clear where you copy them from. — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 10:33, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for your concern and comments. I am trying to abide by the copyright law, so I introduce English examples from this wiktionary, simple English version or other wiktionaries and tranlated these into Korean examples by myself. If I copy them, of course I will do it within the limit of fair use, I will insert the source from which the examples come. HappyMidnight (talk) 13:21, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you very much and keep up the good work! — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 21:58, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you too. I wonder if you can switch from #* to #: to make the examples visible by default, unless they are real quotations, especially, if they are not numerous and without the [quotations] label? Like this:
- Thank you very much and keep up the good work! — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 21:58, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

- 그 여자는 그 책 삼십칠(37)쪽을 펴서 큰 소리로 읽기 시작했다.

가족들
[edit]Hi,
How are you? Have you left Wiktionary? I've got a usage question, I hope you can answer. I am reading my old Korean lessons and found that I marked this with a question mark but I never got an answer. In the example sentence below, why is 가족 is used with a plural marker? The sentence is about Jenny's (one) family.
- gajokdeulhago gachi jeonyeogeul meogeosseoyo.
- I had dinner with my family.
I don't know if HappyMidnight responds. @TAKASUGI Shinji as well. Thanks in advance. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 05:50, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- 들 (deul) means the subject is a group of specific people or things. In that context, it doesn’t mean “families” but “members of my family”. Similarly, you can say 우리들 (urideul), 저희들 (jeohuideul), 너희들 (neohuideul). — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 08:24, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- I totally agree with Takasugi Shinji's explain. Usually, we speak either of below
- gung: wanggwa geuui gajokdeuri saneun keun jip.
- Palace: A big house where the king and his family live.
or
- gung: wanggwa geuui gajogi saneun keun jip.
- Palace: A big house where the king and his family live.
So, "들" is not necessary but "가족들" is also good collocation.HappyMidnight (talk) 11:02, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you both very much for the detailed response! --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 06:03, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
-기로 하다
[edit]Hi,
Do you know where the "dictionary part" or lemma would be in 하기로 하다 type of expressions, as in 친구하고 등산하기로 했어요? Also @TAKASUGI Shinji, LoutK, in case you guys want to make an entry. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 12:50, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, I hope this entry 기로 하다 will help you. HappyMidnight (talk) 14:38, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for the entry! I've made some improvements and added a usage example. @TAKASUGI Shinji, LoutK: pls view. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 00:50, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
-고 나서
[edit]Hi. Also @TAKASUGI Shinji, LoutK: Which grammar pattern is -고 나서 following? E.g. 밥을 먹고 나서 - after eating, 커피를 마시고 나서 - after drinking coffee. Which lemma should it be under and do we need an entry for it? --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 09:45, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- 외국인을 위한 한국어 문법 2 (→ISBN) has an entry of -고 나다. — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 13:16, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- @TAKASUGI Shinji: Thanks. I don't seem to be able to see definitions or examples in Google books. Could you give a bit more info about the entry, please? --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 22:23, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
