Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Formatting and such

[edit]

Glad to see a new Czech editor! I hope you don't mind, I looked through a few of your edits and I have some suggestions. On pages like číman, it might be better to turn that reference into a template. If you need help, you can contact me. It might also be faster through the official WT:Discord, where you can ask questions if you're unsure about things. Happy editing! Vininn126 (talk) 12:56, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello and thank you! That was actually the first time I used a direct reference in order to buttress the claim that číman has unknown etymology, so I was not entirely sure how to do it in line with Wiktionary standards (in the end I copied a style of reference from another article, is there a problem with it?). And what are the other suggestions? I am of course more than happy to implement any sound advice. CaptainPermaban (talk) 13:58, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I see, this is a news website! I will use the {{cite-web}} template. It might be a good idea to somehow get your hands on a Czech etymological dictionary, like one of Rejzek's (i.e. {{R:cs:Rejzek:2001}},{{R:cs:Rejzek:2007}}, or {{R:cs:Rejzek:2015}}). Ironically enough, this dictionary is referenced in the second sentence of the article alongside either {{R:cs:Machek:1954}}, or {{R:cs:Machek:1968}} which is why I dared to cite it in the first place. Thanks for the correct formatting! CaptainPermaban (talk) 14:12, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
