Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
- A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
- If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.
You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.
Again, welcome! Wyang (talk) 07:51, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Xhosa tones
[edit]Hi, are you a native Xhosa speaker or do you have somewhere to look up the tones? If the latter, I'd love to know where. —Rua (mew) 11:46, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
Pronunciation
[edit]Please don't add pronunciations for words that are only stems and not fully-formed words. The tone can differ depending on what form something is. The imperative has a different tone from the verb stem for example, even if they are otherwise identical. —Rua (mew) 11:56, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
How do you know that this has underlying HHH and not LHH? —Rua (mew) 12:00, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Same question again for isibhokodo. How do you think it's HHH and not HLL? —Rua (mew) 17:37, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Zulu verb tones
[edit]The tones of verbs of 1 or 3+ syllables cannot be determined from the imperative form, which is the form that Doke cites. The tone pattern of a 3-syllable imperative is always low-high-low, regardless of the actual tone class. —Rua (mew) 17:35, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Recent entries
[edit]Hey, I noticed you added a bunch of words that I listed as descendants on Proto-Bantu entries. I was kind of hoping to hold off on those, because they're very stubby entries, and they ought to have tone and noun class marked as appropriate. Also, in general, it's best not to create entries just based on what another editor is doing, but instead to work off of sources you know to be reliable. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:07, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- I know. --Tyranitar Man (talk) 10:02, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- If you know, why are you still doing it? —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 14:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
Etymology
[edit]Hi, when making new entries, could you please add an etymology section with Template:request for etymology when you don't know the etymology? It's nice to have all the missing etymologies categorized together. Smashhoof (talk) 20:02, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
And don’t use {{etyl}}
, use {{bor}}
and {{der}}
. {{etyl}}
is being sorted out. Fay Freak (talk) 06:50, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

Xhosa talk pages
[edit]Hey, did you see the queries at Talk:isitora and Talk:ityhefu? Any views on the suggestions? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 07:24, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- Yes. I added the etymologies for these entries. --Tyranitar Man (talk) 12:12, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- All right, thanks.
←₰-→Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:51, 24 September 2019 (UTC)- You're welcome. --Tyranitar Man (talk) 23:17, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- All right, thanks.
Is this really a term in Northern Sotho? nso.oxforddictionaries.com lists kwa with the same meaning and I see no entry for utlwa. I believe kwa is the correct term (and cognate with utlwa). Smashhoof (Talk · Contributions) 22:32, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think so. kwa in Northern Sotho or Sepedi means the same as utlwa in Sesotho. --Tyranitar Man (talk) 23:04, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Proto-Nguni
[edit]Given the poor work on reconstructing Proto-Nguni (which completely fails to account for Lala, among other things), we're hoping to remove it from Wiktionary. It's going to be a long process, but there's no reason to add term requests or Proto-Nguni at all in etymologies, as it will just get removed at some point. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 05:32, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- Got it. --Tyranitar Man (talk) 06:14, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
I can't seem to find any good Xhosa dictionaries, which is really frustrating, but I wanted to ask where you got this entry from. Based on the Zulu entry in Doke, I suspect that both the definition and the noun class may be incorrect. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 18:21, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for replacing it, but you still left the incorrect definition, which I've now fixed — please try to be careful! —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 18:36, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
I noticed the Zulu entry mistakenly said it was the class 8 adjective concord, but really that should be ezin- in Zulu, so I've corrected it. Do you happen to know if the same applies for Xhosa and Northern/Southern Ndebele? Smashhoof (Talk · Contributions) 00:43, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
Southern or Northern Ndebele
[edit]Hi, I noticed an entry that you created with a Northern Ndebele header but Southern Ndebele language codes and templates: isiyingilizi. I changed the header to match the rest of the entry, but could you verify which language it was as I was just guessing? — Eru·tuon 19:50, 11 September 2021 (UTC)
Xhosa ni-
[edit]I noticed that Xhosa ni has two etymologies with exactly the same entries. I also noticed that @Smashhoof changed the Zulu entry (so there's ni- and ní-): https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=ni-&type=revision&diff=61935785&oldid=61652082
Do you know if the same change needs to be done for Xhosa? MartinMichlmayr (talk) 09:09, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- I just noticed they are not exactly the same (one says "subject concord" and one "object concord"). But maybe Smashhoof's change still applies to Xhosa? MartinMichlmayr (talk) 09:25, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Glosses should actually describe particular senses and not be lists of translations
[edit]Stop doing that kind of “definitions”, which I had to condense. Thanks. Fay Freak (talk) 00:03, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Stop adding entries without sources
[edit]Or I will block you. You have been doing this for years, and you've been told many times it's not good enough. Theknightwho (talk) 13:41, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
