Welcome!

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including. There is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome!

vuvuzela

[edit]

Hi. Are you French? Just wanted to check that pronunciation you added. Sure it's not /vyvy-/ ...? Ƿidsiþ 15:20, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Yes, I'm French.
Concerning vuvuzela, the most common pronunciation (by far) is /vuvu-/; I don't claim that /vyvy-/ doesn't exist, but I don't remember having heard it. If the word continues to be used in the future (I mean after the World Cup; depends whether or not vuvuzelas will be allowed in Europe and in France especially...), then it is likely that it will be “Frenchized” and pronounced /vyvy-/. But for the moment, as far as I know, it is not the case.
By the way, there is another interesting information: it seems that there's a little hesitation about the word's gender. If the great majority of the people on the radio and TV say une or la vuvuzela, I have clearly heard (and even read) le vuvuzela two or three times. But “officially”, vuvuzela is feminine. --Actarus (Prince d'Euphor) 16:53, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK thanks. I work in a French newsroom and I have heard both forms too. Ƿidsiþ 17:16, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

My talk page

[edit]

Please don't edit my talk page unless you intend to read my reply. For all your skills with many languages, taking other people's opinions into consideration is not one of them. You've posted the same point a few times on my talk page, despite the fact that I agreed with you even before you posted it. In short, either read my replies, or don't post. Mglovesfun (talk) 15:07, 1 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

There you go, I warned you. Do not comment on my talk page if you do not intend to read what I write. If you want to leave me a message, write it here. By the way, how old are you? Mglovesfun (talk) 10:27, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I understand your argument. I'm trying to het you to understand your own argument. Ignorance of what the other person is saying is the easiest way to win any argument - simply ignore your opponent no matter what they say. So much so that even when I repeatedly say I agree with you, you still tell me I'm wrong. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:30, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Why do you want to know my age? --Actarus (Prince d'Euphor) 08:57, 3 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi. I saw where you had reverted my edit once again. You are incorrect to state that my etymology isn't sourced. It is. It simply is not verbatim, which might smack at plagiarism. The one that you call yours is actually the base of mine, so I lightheartedly take offense to you claiming it as your own :). I am not trying to get into a struggling match, perhaps we can make a compromise and show both, as most authorities claim that it is of either origin. Mine however is more comprehensive. I have painstakingly appended several sources together to provide a complete etymology, which hopefully can be regarded as one of adequate quality.

I will also advise you that yours needs some tweaking to come up to the desired standard of English Wiktionary. I ought to know, because I have learned the hard way how they want to see them here, as has been communicated to me by the Administrators. The formatting is not up to par. It needs cleaning up. I will add both as alternate etymolgies because the one you have quoted is a source, even though I do not agree with all of it, but that is besides the point. I hope this meets to your satisfaction.
