[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Why do you suspect Ossetian mediation for these Circassian words of ultimate Persian origin? Despite being an Iranian people, Ossetians had little contact with Persian civilization, as opposed to for example Georgians and Turks. Vahag (talk) 11:07, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
- Kabardians in particular had little contact with Ottomans compared to other tribes, so I assumed there might be an Alan connection. I also am against attributing every Perso-Arabic term to Turkish, as is often done, I don't think it's realistic (this has also been used maliciously by certain nationalists). If you think Ossetian is unlikely you can remove it. If there is evidence of Ottoman connection, it can be added. If unsure, can just state that it originates from Persian. - Alans too were not Persianate, they are not a good a mediator of words from Western Asian civilizations. Neither Abaev nor Shagirov trace the path of how these terms penetrated into North Caucasus. Until we figure out what is going on, it is better to simply say "ultimately from Persian". Vahag (talk) 11:09, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Vahagn Petrosyan - Do you know which declension templates I should use for Adyghe and Kabardian respectively? Уикиредактор (talk) 15:55, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- The templates are in Category:Adyghe noun inflection-table templates and Category:Kabardian inflection-table templates. I don't know how to use them. The only active Circassian editor was User:Adamsa123 but he is not active any more. The best way is to look how these templates were used by him in other entries and follow by analogy.
