The idea of indicating false friends isn't bad per se, but how would this be used? As a sense on its own? -- Liliana • 18:32, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
- Usage note perhaps?—msh210℠ (talk) 21:53, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
- Sounds like the next subheading below translations. Appendices listing false friends for language pairs could be generated from the entries. —Michael Z. 2012-05-04 18:31 z

{{false friend}}
I would argue this is a useful template for etymology sections, especially for unrelated related languages. The code would have to be changed, of course. Thadh (talk) 11:30, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- Would be handy to have SOME form of marking false friends. Vininn126 (talk) 11:32, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- We do have the template
{{U:false_friend}}
, though it seems little used, almost entirely for Spanish, and may have been largely the work of one person. —Soap— 12:28, 5 November 2022 (UTC)- As the person who created that specific page, I just want to say I was just generalizing and making into a reusable template what had been Template:U:es:false friend and manual wording in some entries. - -sche (discuss) 22:18, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
- We do have the template
- False friendship is somewhat of a spectrum: words rarely exactly match up. This means that the template would go only on terms where the difference is very obvious. Even in these cases, it just seems redundant to the definition section. Catonif (talk) 15:21, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- Undelete. I agree that this would be very useful, especially for folks learning a language. AG202 (talk) 20:39, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
- Undelete per nom. Theknightwho (talk) 12:48, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

- In my opinion, we should think about the rules surrounding the use of this template (and pointing out false friends in general) to avoid overuse. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 21:00, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah, and we — let me ping the undelete voters @AG202, Theknightwho, Binarystep, Saltmarsh — should decide whether we want an etymology section template (which seems to be the proposed use for T:false friend), or the usage note template T:U:false friend (T:U:es:false friend, etc), because I don't see a reason to have both. (Do any of you?) - -sche (discuss) 22:18, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry - no very strong opinion - but wherever it's used it should be done sparingly and with a minimum of blah ! — Saltmarsh🢃 06:34, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Delete the oones with a langcode in the name; that could be set up as a parameter. As too the section - I can see the upsides to both but I think Usage Notes would ultimately make the most sense. Vininn126 (talk) 10:32, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- I agree with Surjection and -sche, and I am therefore reticent to see it undeleted just yet. An appendix would be the best place for gathering false friends, though maybe a template could be used in the main space to tag false friends and prepare the ground for creating such an appendix. - Kept deleted. Despite everyone voting for undeletion, the discussion stalled, and anyone who really wants to bring this back can. Denazz (talk) 20:47, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
