Usage
[edit]This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Robert Howard's work Four New Plays (1st edition, 1665). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.
Chapter or play | First page number |
---|---|
To the Reader | unnumbered page |
The Surprisal, a Comedy | unnumbered page |
The Committee, a Comedy | page 67 |
The Indian Queen, a Tragedy (with John Dryden; first performed January 1664) | page 137 |
The Vestal-virgin, or The Roman Ladies. A Tragedy. | page 177 |
Parameters
[edit]The template takes the following parameters:
|chapter=
– use this parameter to specify the name of a chapter quoted from, for example, "To the Reader", or a prologue or epilogue of one of the plays. As "To the Reader" is unpaginated, use|1=
or|page=
to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL ishttps://archive.org/details/fournewplaysvizs00howa/page/n6/mode/1up
, specify|page=6
. (The prologue of The Surprisal is also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL.)|1=
or|page=
, or|pages=
– mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:- Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11
. - You must also use
|pageref=
to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
- Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this:
- This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) and scene number quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
|act=
– mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the act number quoted from. However, if it is unable to do so, use this parameter to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this:|act=I
.
The Surprisal | ||||
Act I pages 1–12 |
Act II pages 12–24 |
Act III pages 24–40 |
Act IV pages 40–53 |
Act V pages 53–66 |
The Committee | ||||
Act I pages 71–83 |
Act II pages 84–95 |
Act III pages 95–108 |
Act IV pages 108–121 |
Act V pages 121–134 |
The Indian Queen | ||||
Act I pages 141–146 |
Act II pages 147–152 |
Act III pages 153–160 |
Act IV pages 160–166 |
Act V pages 167–174 |
The Vestal-virgin | ||||
Act I pages 181–189 |
Act II pages 189–199 |
Act III pages 199–209 |
Act IV pages 209–221 |
Act V pages 221–230 |
|scene=
– mandatory in some cases: only The Surprisal is divided into scenes. In most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the scene number quoted from. If it is unable to do so, use this parameter to specify the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals, like this:|scene=i
.|2=
,|text=
, or|passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|footer=
– a comment on the passage quoted.|brackets=
– use|brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
