Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Dryden's work Absalom and Achitophel (3rd edition, 1682), and Nahum Tate and Dryden's work The Second Part of Absalom and Achitophel (2nd edition, 1682); the 1st editions of these works (First Part, London: Printed for J[acob] T[onson]; sold by W. Davis, 1681, →OCLC; Second Part, London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1682, →OCLC) are not currently available online. The template may be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |part=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the Second Part, specify |part=2.
  • |chapter= – the name of a chapter or part of the work other than the poem, for example, |chapter=To the Reader.
  • |url= – if quoting from an unpaginated part of the work, use this parameter to manually specify the URL of the webpage to be linked to, like this: |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OUBoAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP5.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template to link to an online version of the work.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
