Obscure words
[edit]@Fenakhay: I thought this may be a rare plural of غَائِلَة (ḡāʔila), which is usually غَوائِل (ḡawāʔil), but old poets have often surprising ones, like e.g. those mentioned at أَمَة (ʔama), for which the linked Nöldeke has cited all the quotes he could get. It also reminded me of a poem I quoted under inter alia at ثَمِل (ṯamil) and translated metrically, where first هَمّ (hamm, “sorrow”) is done away with by boozing and then the alkie is also said to be نَقِيّ (naqiyy), so it reminded me of a common idea of being free from sorrows because of being well provided in food and drink. If you have a better meaning go for it, I am bad at poetry.
Which Arjan though is it, perhaps we need a Wikipedia link? Unless it is about أَرْجَان (ʔarjān, “argan”) molasses, for which it is probably too early – I see it has some place pattern like the نُبَاطِيُّ (nubāṭiyyu) in the poem at فُرَانِق (furāniq) (which however has variants in that place if one searches this poem; T:var did not exist yet and would break the transcription). - @Fay Freak: It makes sense, that's how I understood it as well. The problem with *أَغَالِي (ʔaḡālī) is that plurals with the pattern أَفَاعِل (ʔafāʕil) have their singular's pattern أَفْعَل (ʔafʕal) (e.g. أَقْصَر (ʔaqṣar), أَقَاصِر (ʔaqāṣir)) or that their singular's first hamza is not part of the root (e.g. إِصْبَع (ʔiṣbaʕ), أَصَابِع (ʔaṣābiʕ)). So the expected singular would be *أَغْلِيَة (ʔaḡliya) or *أُغْلِيَة (ʔuḡliya). Though some nouns have irregular plurals regardless of its root.
- The adjective رَجَانِيِّ (rajāniyyi) is the nisba of أَرْجَان (ʔarjān, “Arjan, Arrajan”) which was an old city in Persia and was known for their molasses.
