@Vahagn Petrosyan Hi. LIV and the Leiden series say this derives from the thematic present of Proto-Indo-European *sperdʰ-. What do you think? —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करें • योगदान) 02:38, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- @AryamanA, hi. I don't see LIV saying anything about Armenian. It is true that many sources derive this from Proto-Indo-European *sperdʰ-, but others reject the derivation because of the difference in meaning. Also, *սպերդեմ (*sperdem) is expected from Proto-Indo-European *sperdʰ-. --Vahag (talk) 16:11, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Vahagn Petrosyan: Thanks for the expansion and copious references! My bad, it's not in LIV. As for the disputed etymology, I've added a clarifying note to the PIE page. What does vocalic *r̥ become in Armenian by the way? —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करें • योगदान) 20:31, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- The clarifying note is a good idea. The PIE *r̥ becomes ար (ar), as in բարձր (barjr), բարդ (bard), մարդ (mard). սպրդեմ (sprdem) requires PIE *spird- or *spurd-. --Vahag (talk) 20:49, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Vahagn Petrosyan: Okay, thanks. *spird- or *spurd- both look like unlikely PIE formations to me. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करें • योगदान) 20:52, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
