@Fay Freak, the better sources indeed identify this with the "marking nut". The New World cashew could not have been known to Amirdovlat. Arabic ذ (ḏ) gives Middle Armenian զ (z), so perhaps the borrowing is from Persian. But Steinschneider mentions an Arabic form with د (d) here, page 319. --Vahag (talk) 11:41, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
- In Arabic one should be wary of the possibility of تَصْحِيف (taṣḥīf). We are concerned with the time of rasm. Surely as you pointed out in an edit summary to بَلاذُر (balāḏur) the word is Indian as it is an Indian tree and even more popular in India. Sanskrit भल्लात (bhallāta), भल्लातक (bhallātaka) means the marking-nut plant. Is –ur a Persian suffix, @Calak? If yes we already have the etymology. Fay Freak (talk) 15:36, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
- I do not doubt that the Arabic is borrowed via Iranian. I am trying to figure out whether Middle Armenian is immediately from Iranian or via Arabic. The Armenian medieval botanical literature is largely based on Arabic tradition, but borrowings from Persian and Turkish are also possible. --Vahag (talk) 06:43, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
