[edit]Presumably from Proto-Germanic *matjô, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *met- (“to cut”). Cognate with Sanskrit मत्य (matyà, “harrow, roller, club”), Proto-Slavic *motyka (“hoe”), Lithuanian matikkas (“mattock”), Latin mateola (“mallet”).
