[edit]From earlier *ksarus, inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *skaras, from Proto-Indo-European *skor-os, from *(s)ker- (“to scrape, to scrub, to clean”). Related to *xarъ (“gloomy, dark; dilapidated, shabby”).
