Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *walīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *wolh₁-éye-ti, causative of *welh₁- (to choose, want). By surface analysis, *voľa (will) +‎ *-iti. Cognate to Proto-Germanic *waljaną (to will), Sanskrit वरयति (varáyati, to choose), also compare Vulgar Latin voleō.
