From Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-(dʰ)lo-, from *tetḱ-. Morphologically *tes- +‎ *-slo (instrumental suffix) or *tes- +‎ *-sla.

Cognate with Proto-Germanic *þehslō (adze).
