[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-(dʰ)lo-, from *tetḱ-. Morphologically *tes- + *-slo (“instrumental suffix”) or *tes- + *-sla.
Cognate with Proto-Germanic *þehslō (“adze”).
