Inherited from Proto-Slavic *tesla / *teslo (adze), from Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-dʰlo-, from *tetḱ-.

Cognate with Serbo-Croatian те̏сла, Polish ciosła, Old Norse þexla (axe), Old High German dehsala (axe, adze).
