Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *telktei, from Proto-Indo-European *telk- (to thrust, strike). Cognate with Lithuanian tìlkti (to be tame), Latvian nuôtalcît, Proto-Celtic *tolkos (an attack, tear).
