[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stāw-, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-ēw-, from *steh₂-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *stōjaną (“to stow”) and akin to Latvian stãvêt (“to stand”), Lithuanian stovė́ti (“to stand”).[1]
