From *po- +‎ *čiti,[1] from the root *kʷyeh₁-. Akin to Sanskrit चिर (cirá, long), Avestan 𐬱𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌𐬨 (šāitim, happiness), Latin quiēs (rest), Latin tranquīlus, tranquillus (tranquil), Proto-Germanic *hwīlō (pause, while).
