Etymology

Iterative of *kusiti (to probe, to trail) +‎ *-jati, of Germanic origin, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵews- (to test, try). In Slavic languages where *ǫ > *u, *kušati has merged with native *kǫšati (to bite off) (from *kǫsъ (bite)).
