[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kar-, from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂er-. Cognate with Lithuanian káirinti (“to provoke”) (with secondary ablaut), Latvian kaĩrinât, karinât (“to tease, to irritate”), Latin carināre (“to use abusive language”), Old High German harawēn (“to mock”), Ancient Greek κάρνη (kárnē, “damage, loss”) (Hesychius), Old Irish caire (“blame”).
