From Proto-Balto-Slavic *jas gadas. Equivalent to *je +‎ *-gъda. Compare Lithuanian jeigu (if), Sanskrit यदा (yadā, if, when), Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬛𐬁 (yadā).
