[edit]Fientive derivative of *dьrtъ (“old, ragged”) + *-ěti, ultimately descending from Proto-Indo-European *derH- (“to tear”). Akin to Proto-Germanic *trudaną (“to tread”), Ancient Greek δέρνομαι (dérnomai).
