[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *kewHp- (“heap; to heap”). Cognate with Sanskrit कूप (kūpa, “well, hole”), Latin cūpa (“tub, cask”), Old High German hubil, Old Saxon huvil (“hill”), Lithuanian kaũpas (“heap”), kaupiù (“to heap”).[1][2]
