[edit]Unknown; possibly from earlier *fonx with back-assimilation, from Proto-Sarmatian *fōnx, from Proto-Scythian *fānxu, from Proto-Iranian *fankuš of unknown origin, compare Younger Avestan 𐬟𐬃𐬥𐬐𐬎 (fā̊nku, “summit, top”).[1][2] Alternatively borrowed from Classical Persian کوهان (kōhān), from Proto-Iranian *káwfaHnah, from *káwfš.
