[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dušmánās, from Proto-Indo-European *dusmenēs. Equivalent to *duš- (“bad”) + *mánah (“mind, thought”). Cognate with Sanskrit दुर्मनस् (durmanas, “sad, melancholy”).
