Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dušmánās, from Proto-Indo-European *dusmenēs. Equivalent to *duš- (bad) +‎ *mánah (mind, thought). Cognate with Sanskrit दुर्मनस् (durmanas, sad, melancholy).
