Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/sneganą
Appearance
Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown; often cited as being related to Sanskrit नाग (nāgá, “snake”), however the Sanskrit requires Proto-Indo-European *(s)neg-, whilst the Germanic demands aspirated *snegʰ-.[1] A connection to *snīkaną (“to crawl, creep”), is very tempting but difficult to reconcile morphologically.
