[edit]Probably from a Proto-Indo-European *sneyg- (“to crawl”), and cognate with Latvian snīgt (“to hand, pass, reach”).[1] See also the semantically and phonetically similar *sneganą (“to crawl, creep”), though a formal relation is difficult.
