[edit]From Old Norse sníkja, from Proto-Germanic *snīkaną, cognate with Norwegian snike, Swedish snika, English sneak. In Old West Norse, the verb has a weak conjugation, but it is a strong verb in the continental Scandinavian languages and in Old English.
