Particularly: “Apparently from an onomatopoeic Proto-Indo-European *(s)krey- (to screech, make noise), similar to Breton screo (screeching seabird), Old Irish scret (scream), Latvian krina (sow),[1] with perhaps some semantic influence from Proto-Indo-European *sker- (to cut off).”
