[edit]Inherited from Middle French escrier, from Old French escrier (“to scream, cry out”), partially from es- (“out”) + crier (“to cry, shout, scream”), and partially from Frankish *skrīan (“to yell, scream, call out, shout”), from Proto-Germanic *skrīhaną (“to cry out”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerey- (“to scream, caw”).
