Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *Hroyǵ-éye-ti, a causative o-grade of *Hreyǵ- (to stretch out, reach). Cognate with Lithuanian ráižytis (to keep stretching), réižti (to stretch, tighten), Old Irish rigid (to stretch).[1]
