From Proto-Indo-European *neh₂w-tí-s, a *ti- stem related to the root of *nawiz (corpse).[1][2] See also Old Norse neyða (to force), Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌿𐌸𐌾𐌰𐌽 (nauþjan).
