From Proto-Indo-European *neh₂wis (“corpse”), from *neh₂w- (“death; corpse”). Cognate with Latvian nāve (“death”), Proto-Slavic *navь (“corpse”). Cf. also Tocharian B naut- (“to disappear; be destroyed”).
