[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂póneh₂ or *kh₂pnéh₂, from the root *keh₂p- (“to take, seize, grasp”). Close cognate with Old Irish cúan m (“port, harbor”), however this may be due to borrowing at an early stage.[1]
