Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂póneh₂ or *kh₂pnéh₂, from the root *keh₂p- (to take, seize, grasp). Close cognate with Old Irish cúan m (port, harbor), however this may be due to borrowing at an early stage.[1]
