Uncertain. Perhaps from Pre-Germanic *bʰlogos, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleg-. Compare Proto-Indo-European *bʰleyǵ- (to shine, burn, scorch).

Alternatively, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *mlagos, from Proto-Indo-European *melh₂-. Compare Ancient Greek μέλᾱς (mélās, dark, black).
