Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *le- (to become). Cognate to Proto-Samic *leatēk (to be), Hungarian lesz (to become), and in certain conjugations of Hungarian van (to be, exist) (lenni, leszek, lenne, légy, etc.).
