Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably from a Proto-Indo-European *h₃éd(s)gʷ-o-s (knot), and cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hádᶻgas (knot (in a tree); branch).[1] The PIE root is further suggested to be connected to Proto-Indo-European *h₃ósdos (branch) through metathesis, perhaps ultimately deriving from *h₃ésth₁ (bone).[2]
