[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂pyéti, from *keh₂p- (“to grab, seize”).[1][2] Cognate to (Baltic) Latvian Latvian kàmpju, Latvian kàmpt; Proto-Celtic *kawnos (Old Irish cúan, Irish cuan, Scottish Gaelic cuan); Proto-Germanic *habnō, Proto-Germanic *habjaną (“to have, lift”); Proto-Hellenic *kapťō (Ancient Greek κάπτω (káptō)), Proto-Hellenic *kṓpā (Ancient Greek κώπη (kṓpē)); Proto-Italic *kapiō (Latin capiō) and (perhaps) also Old Armenian խափ (xapʻ), Old Armenian խափանեմ (xapʻanem) (perhaps) and Latin capsa.
