Add topic@Justinrleung, Erutuon May I suggest the addition of Chinese subvarieties (?) as etymology languages? It has the potential to be helpful in etymology sections, and would help in aligning Chinese pseudo-codes (mn
Min Nan xm
Xiamen) with standard Wiktionary practice. —Suzukaze-c (talk) 23:45, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
- It's a good idea in general. I'm not sure how useful it is for etymologies to include varieties like Chaoyang dialect, though 🙃 — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 00:07, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- 🤷 I was thinking that there could be a 1-1 correspondence between zh-dial locations and etymology-only codes. (overkill?) —Suzukaze-c (talk) 00:11, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Module:zh-pron "mn > tw:" (Taiwanese) vs. Module:zh-usex/data "TW" (Taiwanese) is probably not ideal in the long run.
The custom codes are also too far removed from the ISO codes.
We have C-GZ specifically in {{zh-usex}}
for Guangzhou Cantonese. What would we do with the Hokkien dialects, which have pronounced pronunciation differences?
For comparison: the family tree at Category:Proto-Iranian language. —Suzukaze-c (talk) 02:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
pipe-dream: use/connect this data in/to
- zh-dial
- zh-pron
- zh-usex

- summary +α: As shown by Module:zh-usex/data, different locations require unique transliterations, and templates need a way to be instructed (either for labelling or auto-transliteration). Either give them real codes, or use Category:Dialectal data modules? We do not (should not?) give Chaozhou-dialect romanization for Shantou-dialect speech, etc. Plan for a future of diversified and comprehensive dialect coverage. —Fish bowl (talk) 06:41, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
