[edit]From Cantonese 硭街 (“town of mườngs”) (SV: Mang Nhai).
During the Nguyễn Dynasty, this area was the Vạn Ninh (萬寧) Canton, the Bát Tràng (鉢塲) Canton and a part of the Hà Môn (河門) Canton.
The name Móng Cái began to appear in 1947 during the period of French Indochina.
