[edit]Generally considered as a derivative of the Hungarian verb lesz (“to be”) hence its original meaning (see below); another theory is it might be derived from Slavic *lovъ (“hunter”). Its origin is unrelated to the Hungarian noun Hungarian levente (“warrior”).
