Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 橫山, composed of 橫 (“horizonal”) and 山 (“mountain”).

The distinct tên Nôm (“demotic name”) of this range, from which this tên chữ was derived, has seemingly been lost, although it can probably be assumed to be *núi Ngang, survived in the name of Ngang Pass (đèo Ngang).
