[edit]From Middle High German hanef, hanif, hanf, from Old High German hanaf, from Proto-West Germanic *hanapi, from Proto-Germanic *hanapiz.
Compare Dutch hennep, English hemp, Danish hamp. Also cognate with Ancient Greek κάνναβις (kánnabis), whence the doublet Cannabis.
