Etymology

[edit]

From Chut [Rục] cɨ́ːt ("mountain") (other "Chứt" groups have different words for "mountain", such as Arem lakùːɲ, Mày kon²). Often linked further with the word for "mountain" in Chamic; compare Western Cham [script needed] (chœk), Eastern Cham cek [cəʔ], Rade čư̆.

As a term for the "ethnic group", this seems like a rather recent invention. Speakers of these languages often self-identify with their own group (Rục, Sách, Mày, Arem, etc.), not often with the label Chứt as whole.
