Etymology

From Thai บ้าน (bâan) or Lao ບ້ານ (bān, village) + Thai แม่ (mɛ̂ɛ) or Lao ແມ່ (, mother) + Rade Thuôt (from Y Thuôt, a Rade personal name; rendered in Thai as ถ็วต), literally "Thuôt's mother's village". Compare Buôn Ma Thuột (literally Thuôt's father's village).
